Alok Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Reading West, on Wednesday met with small business owners from across the Thames Valley at the ‘Women in Business in Parliament’ event organised by the Federation of Small Businesses.
Alok Sharma came to support and listen to local business owners and hear from them about the challenges and obstacles they face, specifically hearing about the disparity in opportunity that female entrepreneurs receive compared to their male counterparts.
50 members of the FSB from across the Thames Valley came together to meet Members of Parliament and hear from Helen Walbey, the FSB’s Diversity Chair.
Alok Sharma MP said: “I was delighted to be able to sponsor this event in Parliament for the FSB. The Women in Business in Parliament event was a great opportunity for both male and female small business champions to get together, share ideas and celebrate their success.”
Alok continued: “Small business owners are the back bone of our economy and it is fantastic to have an event like this where they can be celebrated, but also understand what Parliamentarians can do to help small businesses.”
Helen Walbey, Chair of Diversity for the Federation of Small Businesses said: “It was great to have Alok supporting the FSB and its members at this event. I was delighted to be able to highlight some of the areas Government can support women into business. With Alok’s continued support, I look forward to small businesses thriving in Reading West and across the Thames Valley.”
