Alok Sharma, Member of Parliament for Reading West, last Friday visited Little Heath School to present them with an award to mark their achievements in the area of Careers Strategy.
Alok met with the CEO of the Careers and Enterprise Company, Claudia Harris as well as other representatives and Headteacher of Little Heath School, David Ramsden. The meeting was a valuable opportunity for Alok to hear more about the work of the Careers and Enterprise Company and the work it does in bringing together schools, businesses, providers and the Local Enterprise Partnership to support young people both in Reading West and further afield.
Alok presented an award to Little Heath School to commemorate their work in careers strategy, specifically their focus and their continual improvement in this area.
During his visit Alok was also delighted to speak with an A Level politics class. The students were keen to hear about Alok’s change in role to Minister of State for Employment from Minister of State for Housing. The students were very interested to discuss national and international political issues and hear Alok’s thoughts and insights.
Alok Sharma MP said: “I was delighted to visit Little Heath School and congratulate them on their focussed career strategy for their students. Speaking with the Careers and Enterprise Company provided a valuable insight into the work the organisation does to bring together schools and businesses, to motivate young students and instil them with the ambition to succeed. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with Little Heath’s A Level politics students and hearing about their plans for the future, as well as answering their diverse range of questions on life in Westminster.”
Sarah Yong, Head of Government Relations at The Careers & Enterprise Company said: “It was fantastic to visit Little Heath School to pay tribute to their energy and relentless focus on careers education to inspire and prepare their pupils for the world of work. It was also a wonderful opportunity to bring local MP and Employment Minister Alok Sharma along to experience first-hand the transformational effect of what’s happening in Little Heath, supported by our Enterprise Adviser network to do even more.”
David Ramsden, Headteacher at Little Heath School said, “We were delighted to welcome Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West and Minister of State for Employment, to Little Heath School this week, along with the CEO and regional leads of the Careers and Enterprise Company, a national network set up to inspire young people so that they are prepared for the fast-changing world of work. We are proud of our careers work at the school – it is so important for young people to receive outstanding advice and guidance about their future career pathways. We were pleased to receive an award for the work that we have been doing in our leading edge partnership with our Enterprise Advisor, Mrs. Jacky Manning from Berkshire Fire and Rescue.”
Allison Giles, the LEP’s Careers and Enterprise Coordinator added, “The programme is incredibly beneficial for students in that it provides an insight into industry, how their capabilities are relevant to the world of work, and what skills they need to succeed in their chosen or preferred career. It’s not just academic or technical skills that are important. Employers are increasingly looking for softer skills too, such as curiosity, willingness to learn and punctuality. The skills that business leaders can share in the classroom are invaluable in setting young people on the path that is right for them.”
